ENGLISH CHANNEL TUNNEL (CHUNNEL) FIRE CONTINUES TO BURN

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

PARIS - France’s transportation minister says firefighters are still trying to put out a fire in a tunnel under the English Channel a day after it broke out.
Dominique Bussereau says on French radio that undersea train traffic between England and France remains suspended.
Bussereau, speaking on Europe-1 radio Friday, said the cause of the fire was likely accidental.
The fire broke out Thursday on a train shuttling trucks from England to France. Fourteen people were injured, with six of them suffering from smoke inhalation.
Officials said Thursday that firefighters on both sides of the Channel had got the blaze under control but weren’t able to entirely extinguish it.
Bussereau would not speculate on how long the tunnel would be closed to traffic, saying “we first have to put out the fire.”

The Service Forum

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

History repeats itself.
When a Democracy shifts, the result is usually circular. Both candidates called for service of the citizenry. Reminiscent of the Republic of the 1800’s.  A call to arms or an “all hands on deck” as Barack Obama put it, is necessary to preserve the Republic. Service which both Obama and McCain agreed on will empower the citizenry through volunteerism, impassion them and minimize the factions (special interests) which can and have been a threat to perfecting a union and helping America achieve its collective goals.  A coming together for a united purpose. A cause greater than ourselves. Federalist Paper #10 by Madison explains it. The end of the two party system as we know it , so that we may perfect the Union…

Sneakers: Custom Obama Air Force 1s

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

I know it might seem like this blog seems like it’s turning into Obama mania but the amount of Hip Hop related Obama material is too rich right now not to bring to you.  This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.  This pair of Uptowns was spotted on Daddy Yankee Fat Joe.  And check for the pic of Will.I.Am sporting a pair in English after the jump.

And now the real Judge has spoken…

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

… the prosecution of Jacob Zuma is illegal.
The Scorpions’ decision to prosecute African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma on fraud and corruption charges was not legal, Judge Chris Nicholson found in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday.

No political solution, just the law taking its course.
Zuma supporters will view this as him being innocent, but please take note:
The judge emphasised that his ruling did not relate to Zuma’s guilt or innocence, but was merely on a procedural point.

However, innocent until proven guilty is still applicable here. It is just difficult to maintain this position seeing that Jacob Zuma is doing his utmost best to stay out of court, even though Shabir Shaik, his “partner” in crime is busy serving out his sentence in jail hospital.
…I suppose this will be just one more nail in the coffin of “The Scorpions”. Their claims to be independent of politics seem to ring [...]

Palin’s ABC News Interview: So Much to Love

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

Palin’s interview with ABC News. There was so much to love that I just can’t decide on my favourite moment.
Was it when she was asked what new perspectives she could bring to the Russia Georgia situation and she responded that “you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska”.
Was it when she talked about attacking Russia? Or about invading Pakistan?
Or was it when she didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine was?
I just can’t decide.

Shame on You, Sarah Palin

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

I wasn’t going to get too carried away with this - after all it’s not my country, which has plenty of troubles of its own - but what the heck, it’s Friday. I’ve been reading, talking (arguing), thinking more about Sarah Palin as every tidbit of news is thrust in our face by the (still) overexcited media. And really, where does the woman get off?!
First of all I think she’s a formidable woman. She clearly has a lot of ambition, spark, and is not intimidated by anyone - and good for her. But that’s where my compliments will stop. The woman, or anyone sharing her views and beliefs, shouldn’t be in the White House (and preferably nowhere near it either).

The Republican Party’s move to steal away some disgruntled Hillary supporters by nominating a female VP candidate is so transparent it’s a bit insulting really - see Jon Stewart’s sketch on [...]

John McCain offers Barack Obama a cabinet post

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

By Toby Harnden
The Telegraph (UK)
This is one promise that Senator John McCain might struggle to keep if he does win in November. When asked by Time’s Rick Stengel, moderating the 9/11 anniversary forum on national service here at Columbia University in uptown New York city, whether he would give Barack Obama a cabinet job, he responded that he would.

Could Barack Obama be part of a McCain cabinet?
“Governor Schwarzenegger has made the service czar a cabinet-level appointment,” Stengel said. “Would you, as president, do the same and would you name Senator Obama to your cabinet for National Service?” McCain paused for a beat before replying with a smile: “Yes!” Cue laughter and applause.
He also praised Senator Obama for his “outstanding” work as a community organiser - a profession derided by Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin at the Republican convention in St Paul last week. “Of course I respect community organisers,” he [...]

Sarah Palin’s “Task from God”.

Have you ever seen a worm wriggling on a hook? In this particular case, it’s oddly satisfying.
And for crying out loud, Sarah, stop saying “Charlie” so much.  It smacks of desperation in so many ways!

One star fades, another is born

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

The Democrats are in a panic. In a presidential race that is impossible to lose, they are behind. Obama devotees are frantically giving advice. Tom Friedman tells him to “start slamming down some phones.” Camille Paglia suggests, “be boring!”
Meanwhile, a posse of Democratic lawyers, mainstream reporters, lefty bloggers and various other Obamaphiles are scouring the vast tundra of Alaska for something, anything, to bring down Sarah Palin: her daughter’s pregnancy, her ex-brother-in-law problem, her $60 per diem, and now her religion. (CNN reports — news flash! — that she apparently has never spoken in tongues.) Not since Henry II asked if no one would rid him of his turbulent priest, have so many so urgently volunteered for duty.
One star fades, another is born. The very next morning McCain picks Sarah Palin and a new celebrity is launched. And in the celebrity game, novelty is trump. With her narrative, her persona, [...]

Bienvenidos Tu-160!

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-09-2008

After watching the extremely civil discourse from Columbia University as they spoke to the 2 leading Presidential hopefuls, I was struck by how no one seemed to be making crazy allegations, or even moronic insults.  It’s almost as if September 11 is the political Christmas Day, where everyone tries to be nice for a bit.  While that is sure to change by sunrise, it was appealing to see a touch of decency from both sides.
But the rest of the world was busy being crazy as usual.  We all remember Hugo Chavez, the strange man running Venezuela (not that our leader isn’t strange, mind you).  Well, it seems that he is very good friends with Russia, a country that seems busy trying to re-ignite the cold war.  Russia sent over a couple of aircraft to visit Venezuela.  While this would not normally be newsworthy, the fact that they are Tu-160s is a bit [...]
