Treehugger.com first turned us on to the Web site Speechwars. Speechwars counts and graphs how many times each presidential candidate has said a word. Furthermore, Speechwars tallies words used in speeches by Barak Obama and John McCain since 2004.
For instance, consider the word “solar.” McCain has said “solar” 18 times; Obama 40 times. At the bottom of the graph’s horizontal axis you can scroll over and find out the date and title of the speech when the word was uttered.
McCain has used the word “wind” 29 times; in contrast Obama has said “wind” 51 times. The word “renewable” is favored by Obama (112 times), McCain has said it 15 times.
When you query for a combination of two words (such as “solar” and “renewable”) then the graph will show you how those two words overlap.
Check it out, www.speechwars.com. The home page starts with the word “love.” Pick your favorite word and [...]

Senator plans to offer amendments to eliminate wasteful earmarks and end the bans on American energy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), announced that he will offer amendments to the proposed $8 billion highway bailout eliminating wasteful earmarks and ending bans on American energy exploration.
“Our nation’s highway funds have run out because Congress spent billions on earmarks and blocked energy exploration, which has needlessly raised the cost of gasoline,” said Senator DeMint. “I will not object to Senator Reid bringing legislation to the floor to address this shortfall, but when he does, I will offer amendments to actually fix the problems that caused this shortfall in the first place.”
“We must stop wasteful earmarks for bike paths and museums that divert critical funding away from priority roads and bridges. And [...]

Where woud McCain take the country if he were elected as President? With the conservative base of the Republican party energized by his VP pick, the answer is not clear.
He has sponsored and voted for immigration reform measures that would provide a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented workers in the US.
He voted Yes on a bill to provide human embryonic stem cell research.
He believes in evolution but says let local schools districts decided whether to teach creationism.
He voted No on an proposed constitutional amendment that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
He voted yes to a bill to increase funding for AIDS drug assistance programs.
He would allow, but not require school prayer.
He does not own a gun.

The mistake the Right Wing political establishment seems to repeatedly make is that justice can never come from lies. The Iraq war is founded on thick layers of lies and deceptions — well documented — about the initial intent. Truth never comes from lies.

On August 15, when many of the neo-cons (and some of our own posters) were fulminating about the Russia-Georgia Conflict, I wrote that Russia would pay a heavy price in the global financial markets, and our better action would be to stopp pounding the table and wait. Yesterday Bloomberg reported that the situation is getting tougher for Putin in the marketplace.
Russian stocks plunged and the cost to protect government bonds from default jumped to the highest in four years after the central bank shored up the ruble. Bank Rossii said today it intervened, buying rubles from its foreign currency reserves, after withdrawals by investors sent the currency to its lowest level in almost a year. Russia’s RTS Index dropped 3.8 percent today, capping its worst week since May 2006, and credit-default swaps on the government’s debt rose 14 basis points to 166, the highest since November 2004.
In light of all [...]

This is really stupid. The St. Paul Police surrounded a house rented by I-Witness Video, a New York Collective. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now was with them. Yesterday they were recording the Police action against the Anti-War protestors. Now they Police won’t let them out of the house. Talk about prior restraint!

I’m sorry to bring her up again, but Sarah Palin has managed to make headlinesstill with hurricane Gustav being the number one story. The latest news on her is that her 17 year old teenage daughter is 5 months pregnant. I don’t pass judgement or condemn the daughter much less Sarah Palin for this. It’s a very personal and non-political issue. That’s my opinion on it.
But you can bet your boots it will become a factor in the election, as 527 groups (publicly run groups that have no affiliation proper with campaigns, but are supporters who run ads and events) will hammer it to death. The only good thing about to story coming out at all, politically, is that it came out this early, rather than later. I suspect that McCain and Palin both had rumours that it was going to come out without Palin having anything to do with [...]
